Edward R. Murrow High School Senior Art Show

Embryonic describes a state of limbo, when a being is on the cusp of crucial development or change. For high school seniors, the end of their academic career means they’re about to face many challenges and new beginnings. This show consists of forty-nine Edward R. Murrow High School seniors, and was curated by seven of them. Embryonic is the product of years of studying in the Art Institute and growing up in New York City, where students are influenced by their small Murrow community as well as the rich culture and history of the city’s art scene. The show explores themes like childhood nostalgia, friendships and self perception, and provides authentic snapshots of the teen art student experience at Murrow. Embryonic is not only about the future and potential of these young artists, but also serves as an ode to the unique environment in which they have grown leading up to this monumental turning point.

Curatorial Class Mentor: Meaghan Elyse
These students participated in a twelve week curatorial practicum at ELM Foundation. During this time, they learned to develop a curatorial rationale, create a budget proposal, execute and install their exhibition design, and manage an ambitious checklist. In addition, the seniors met with exhibiting artists as well as took a very productive field trip to Materials for the Arts where they sourced much of the material used in the exhibition design.
