Labor continues sculptor Juliana Cerqueira Leite’s research into the ways repetitive movements construct and deconstruct the built world. Four former assembly line workers perform, from memory, the movements that defined their work. Labor uses long exposure photography and techniques pioneered by Lilian and Frank Gilbreth in the early 1900’s to draw parallels between the development of film and photography, and assembly-line based industrial manufacturing. The film and its original score by Nik Colk Void connect the material qualities of their mediums to memory and work, moving from animation to live action.

The screening was made accessible to the community with support from the NY State Council on the Arts. The fully timed print was struck by our friends at Colorlab Corp. and scanned with the Xena scanner built for us by Cinelab Boston. LABOR was commissioned by MONO NO AWARE, and received film support from the org (Bolex, TTL motor, tripods, the Kodak film stock), and was edited by Juliana on our Steenbeck flatbed editing table at our facilities in downtown Brooklyn. About The Artists
Juliana Cerqueira Leite is a Brazilian sculptor based in Brooklyn, New York. Working across sculpture, drawing, and video, her practice explores the body through movement, transformation, and material experimentation, challenging physical, social, and cultural boundaries.
Cerqueira Leite has exhibited internationally at venues including the SculptureCenter (New York), KW Institute (Berlin), Kunsthal Charlottenborg (Denmark), MuBE (São Paulo), and the 2017 Venice Biennale Antarctic Pavilion. She is the recipient of a Pollock-Krasner Foundation Grant and the Kenneth Armitage Sculpture Prize, and has served as a visiting critic in the Yale School of Art Graduate Sculpture program since 2019.
Nik Colk Void is a UK based electronic musician and artist with a vast reputation in experimental shapeshifting and collaboration. Void’s interests lie in the unconventional encounters with her tools, both analogue and digital, as a means of expression. Her key instruments are voice, guitar, and modular euro-rack systems engaging in a new language using extended technique and cut-up sampling through synthesis. As a result, the blends of her compositional tracks lean towards techno, club, experimental and noise.
