LUNAR CYCLE

Surrounded by the expansive interior of The Boiler, Lunar Cycle: Kahori Kamiya is a nimble negotiation of form and the formless. Influenced by the mystical elements of both her personal experience as a mother and ancient Japanese spiritual philosophy, the artist explores universal concerns surrounding the relationship between humans and nature rooted in her ancestral iconography and beliefs.
Grouped together in the center of The Boiler, five go-shintai sculptures suggest this sense of ecology. Relating to the sacred body of the kami (the Japanese word references objects and beings such as spirits, animals, and people possessing powerful charisma), the go-shintai sculptures refer to portals joining terrestrial and spiritual realms such as those found in nature. These include waterfalls, trees, and mountains as well as forms made by humans traditionally incorporating precious stones, mirrors, and swords.
Through its navigation of shadow, light, and form, Lunar Cycle: Kahori Kamiya offers viewers the opportunity to experience the abundant potential found within the interstices between earthly, cosmological, and spiritual realities.
About the Artist
Kahori Kamiya relocated to New York, where she earned her second MFA in Fine Art from the School of Visual Arts. She is a recipient of the Puffin Foundation Grant and an ISCP residency. Her recent works have been featured by Hyperallergic, Art Spiel, WMHT Public Media TV, and Transborder Art TV. She has held solo exhibitions at the Amos Eno Gallery and Prospect Gallery, and her art has been exhibited at notable venues, including the SPRING/BREAK Art Show, Flux Factory, 14th Media Art Biennale, Dumbo Arts Festival, and Oculus Westfield World Trade Center, among others.
