Dieu Donné Paper Workspace Residency, 2023 Exhibition

‘Object/Boundary’ is an exhibition showcasing the innovative works in handmade paper by our 2023 Workspace Residents: Katie Bell, Cecile Chong, Melissa Dadourian, and Baris Gokturk.
Throughout their year-long residencies, these artists embraced experimentation and pushed the boundaries of hand papermaking. Their works explore the ideas of object and environment, materiality, and personal and social relationships, integrating both familiar and novel techniques.
About the Artists
Katie Bell (b. 1985, Rockford, Illinois) is a New York-based artist whose sculptural paintings explore architecture and found objects through construction materials and woodworking techniques. She received her MFA in Painting from the Rhode Island School of Design and has exhibited at institutions including the Brooklyn Academy of Music, Smack Mellon, Locust Projects, and the deCordova Sculpture Park and Museum. Bell is a recipient of a New York Foundation for the Arts Painting Fellowship.
Melissa Dadourian is a Brooklyn and Hudson Valley–based artist whose multidisciplinary practice has been exhibited nationally and internationally. She received a BFA from Pratt Institute and an MFA from Hunter College. Her work has been shown at venues including MoCA Westport, the Dorsky Museum, Susan Eley Gallery, and BravinLee Programs, and she has completed residencies at MASS MoCA, the American Academy in Rome, the Textile Arts Center, and the Cité Internationale des Arts in Paris.
Cecile Chong is a multidisciplinary artist whose work explores migration, identity, and cultural memory. Born in Ecuador to Chinese parents, she has created public installations throughout New York City and exhibited at institutions including Smack Mellon, BRIC House, and the Sugar Hill Children's Museum. Her work is held in the collections of El Museo del Barrio, the Museum of Chinese in America, and The Rockefeller Foundation. Chong received an MFA from Parsons School of Design.
Baris Gokturk is a Turkish artist based in Brooklyn whose interdisciplinary practice spans sculpture, painting, installation, and public art. He earned an MFA in Sculpture from Columbia University and an MFA in Painting from Hunter College. His work has been exhibited at institutions including The Jewish Museum, SECCA, the Frost Art Museum, and the Pera Museum, and he has completed public commissions for Columbia University and the Public Art Fund. Gokturk has participated in residencies at Yaddo, Skowhegan, Fountainhead, and LMCC.

About the Dieu Donné Workspace Program
Established in 1990, the Workspace Program offers annual residencies to New York State emerging artists to create new work in handmade paper. The primary goals of this program are to encourage emerging artists to explore the creative possibilities of handmade paper and to develop this art form through a process of collaboration and experimentation. The Workspace Program is presented to the public through an annual exhibition of works produced in this residency program, as well as through print, digital, and online formats.
