ODYSSEY

June 20, 2022

ODYSSEY was an immersive generative art installation by EDG and 0xDEADBEEF, exploring the intersection of code, sound, image, and machine-driven creativity.

The installation invited viewers into an evolving digital environment where algorithmic systems became collaborators in the artistic process. Through generative processes, the work examined ideas of emergence, unpredictability, and the relationship between human intention and autonomous systems.

Bringing together EDG’s experimental approach to digital environments and 0xDEADBEEF’s practice of creating generative audiovisual works, Odyssey transformed computational processes into a dynamic, sensory experience. The installation reflected on new forms of authorship and the possibilities of art created through collaboration between artists and machines.

This installation kicked off NFT.NYC with a silent auction of previously unseen work, with proceeds benefitting ELM Foundation.

About the Artists

0xDEADBEEF is a Toronto-based artist and engineer whose practice explores the intersection of computation, sound, and visual art through generative systems. Working with a minimal set of tools and low-level computer code, 0xDEAFBEEF creates audiovisual works that examine emergence, randomness, and the relationship between human intention and machine processes.

With a background in electrical engineering, computer animation, and sound technology, 0xDEAFBEEF approaches code as both a material and a creative instrument. His generative artworks are often created entirely through self-contained systems, allowing the algorithms themselves to become the foundation of the final work. His practice has been recognized for pushing the possibilities of on-chain and generative art, exploring questions of authorship, permanence, and digital preservation.

Through a combination of programming, music, and visual experimentation, 0xDEAFBEEF transforms mathematical structures and computational processes into evolving audiovisual experiences.

EDG is a theoretical physicist and generative artist whose practice explores the relationship between computation, complexity, and emergent forms. His scientific research focuses on the origins of complexity in the universe, including questions surrounding the emergence of life and language, which directly informs his approach to algorithmic art.

Working through custom code-based systems, EDG creates generative artworks that investigate how simple rules can produce intricate, unpredictable structures. His works, including Impossible Cathedrals, Mazinaw, and other long-form generative series, explore the boundaries between order and randomness, imagining alternate worlds through mathematical processes.

A pioneer in the on-chain generative art space, EDG has exhibited internationally through digital art platforms and curated exhibitions, using computation as both a creative medium and a tool for exploring questions of emergence, evolution, and the nature of creation itself.
