An Edward R. Murrow High Senior Art Show

In PUBLIC, five Edward R. Murrow High seniors reimagine ELM Foundation as a different sort of communal setting– the iconic, yet intensely relatable, high school bathroom.

In this show, artwork from the Edward Murrow senior class will co-mingle in an environment incorporating elements inspired by high and low brow water closet experiences.

From a fantastical Salon Carré inspired powder room lounge to a more realistic version of a chaotic, grungy, graffiti ridden stall, the exhibition seeks to emphasize the vulnerable, expressive, personal, weird, juvenile, rebellious, and anti-hierarchical leveling aspects of the high school bathroom because, when it comes down to it, we all go.

About the Curators

​

These five Murrow Art Institute seniors participated in a twelve week curatorial practicum at ELM Foundation. During this time, they learned to develop a curatorial rationale, create a budget proposal, execute and install their exhibition design, and manage an ambitious checklist. In addition, the seniors met with exhibiting artists William Norton, Etty Yaniv, and Alejandro Contreras as well as took a very productive field trip to Materials for the Arts where they sourced much of the material used in the exhibition design.
 

Ava Orrantia is committed to studying art history and historic preservation at the School of the Art
Institute of Chicago next year. Sculpture, punk, jewelry, and tattoos are among the most important
things in her life.
 

Elena Scherer will be attending Pratt Institute for industrial design in the fall. In her senior year, she
used a variety of different mediums in her work, from airbrush, oil paint, to weaving.
 

Emily Nocella is planning on attending Ithaca College in the fall and majoring in Art. She is part of the
A.C.E club at Murrow which focuses on addressing ableism.
 

Miya Reid is an artist looking to pursue art in the future by attending Pratt Institute. Learning how
to curate, with the help of her team, makes her confident to pursue projects like this in the future.
Her work has been displayed at The Metropolitan Museum of Art, and she is certain that with added
practice such as gallery curating, she will pursue art as a profession.
 

Vee De La Cruz is a film-focused art student at Edward R. Murrow High School. She’s appreciated art
since she was little and began her artistic journey at a young age. She is set to attend Hunter College in
the Spring of 2024.
