wRit•u•al, a collection of paintings and works on paper COCO144 has created over the last seven years showcasing his unique and identifiable style.

COCO’s body of work has taken on a life of its own, in a creative evolution that has occurred during his more than 50 years as an artist.

A pioneer in the graffiti arts movement, COCO uses aerosol paint and mixed media to write his name in variations of color, texture, line, form, and symbol. Technical and abstract, his work defies the boundaries between polarities.

About the Artist

Tomas Vu is a Vietnamese-born artist who immigrated to the United States as a child and is based in New York City. He received a BFA from the University of Texas at El Paso and an MFA from Yale University. Since 1996, he has taught at Columbia University School of the Arts, where he serves as the LeRoy Neiman Professor of Visual Arts and Director of the LeRoy Neiman Center for Print Studies.

Vu has exhibited internationally, with solo museum exhibitions in Japan, Italy, China, Vietnam, Colombia, and the Philippines. A Guggenheim Fellow and Joan Mitchell Foundation Fellow, his work has earned numerous awards and has been shown in museums and galleries around the world.
