STEAM WORKS
Steam Works is a collaborative free workshop series that connects ELM Foundation's free youth arts education programs with The Boiler's contemporary exhibitions. Through Steam Works, students have the unique opportunity to learn directly from exhibiting artists, exploring the mediums, techniques, and ideas presented in each exhibition.
Pop Art Painting

Exhibition: Sestry Feldman World
Sestry Feldman led a kids workshop inspired by their style and center piece of the exhibition, The House of a Human in 2050.
Kids toured the exhibition and were asked to think - what might the future be like? What invention or technology may solve future challenges? Then they transformed their ideas into Pop Art acrylic paintings.
The artists showed them how to sketch their ideas, put one on canvas with pencil, and paint in the style of Sestry Feldman. The result was amazing to see! These kids locked in and came up with some impressive and thought provoking works.
Fantastical Mask Making

Exhibition: Lighthouse of Moth
This workshop is an invitation to explore your imagination and craft your own magical mask that reflects your inner light.
Students turned old scraps, fabrics, and other found treasures into fantastic creatures like fluttering moths, colorful birds, and shimmering seashells.
Plus, we’ll take a special moment to explore Meaghan’s art installation, where we’ll listen and observe, letting the artwork inspire our own magical stories.
Painting on Water

Our young artists learned about Ebru, t the Turkish art of marbling followed by a hands-on workshop on how to design and paint with inks on water. The designs created on water will then be transferred onto paper and utilized for further art ideas and applications in 2D and 3D.

Finding Meaning in Art

An interactive painting performance, introducing ways to build and discover meaning within their work.
Artist Jesus Benavente will guide youth through the process of painting and will introduce ways to build and discover meaning within their work, outside of a focus on traditional technique. Students will be given a small canvas and painting materials to realize their work, which will be exhibited in The Boiler.

Each exhibiting artist in their own way draws from everyday life imagery, textures, and current affairs. John makes large drawings with intricate details and Etty makes large highly textured installations.
In this workshop they will engage the participants in a discussion about their work and process of making it, then guide students in making mixed media work with attention to surface, pattern, flat and three dimensional forms, drawing and collaging.
Zine Making: the Parts Make the Whole

Zines are ways to tell and share stories, and can cultivate supportive environments for people with similar interests in art, music, poetry, comics, and more.
The workshop will focus on the process of piecing together fragments made of different materials, including fabric and colorful papers to create dynamic compositions through creative and cathartic modes to recharge and connect with others in holistic ways.

Abstract Aerosol Painting

Exhibition: A Grain of Salt | Un Grano de Sal
Create small, abstract paintings with aerosol paint.
A workshop demonstrating the skills of painting with aerosol cans. With lessons in process and “can control” exercises attendees will learn how to create their own small abstract aerosol paintings.
Using Lorenzo's works on display in our gallery, Steam Works attendees will also learn of the connection between Puerto Rico and New York City and how this informs Fernando’s artistic process.

Radical Art Tools

Students will learn how to create custom art-making tools from found objects, and recycled materials, thinking outside the box, and experimentation led by Marria.

Spherochromatic Screen Printing

ELM students will learn how to screenprint on t-shirts using an image of the Spherochromatic dome, similar to the Installation on view in The Boiler space.
Children will then have the opportunity to print their own shirts and hand color in Tomas Vu's geodesic dome, with the colors they see in the space.

Studying Works of COCO144

Using the works of COCO144, on view at The Boiler, students will learn about the evolution in aerosol letter making and culture in New York City, from the movement's beginnings to the present.
Additionally, COCO144 will lead an open discussion on the origins and history of aerosol art, its rise as a global movement, and address the debate over the criminalization and marginalization of the graffiti community
Students will then create their own hand style using materials of aerosol art-making: ink, markers, and spray paint.Student work will be on display for the closing party, Saturday evening.
